Sleep is not just a time when your body and brain shut down. When you are resting, your brain is still active, as it oversees a wide variety of biological maintenance tasks that keep you running in top condition and prepares you for the day ahead.

It’s also not the amount of sleep that is important but the quality of sleep. If you’re giving yourself plenty of time for sleep, but you’re still having trouble waking up in the morning or staying alert all day, you’re probably not be spending enough time in the different stages of sleep – especially deep sleep and REM sleep.

There are 5 different stages of sleep that we cycle through 4 to 5 times a night. Each complete cycle takes an average 90 to 110 minutes to complete. When we first fall asleep we go through the stages relatively quick, with REM sleep only lasting a short time. As the night progresses, we go through them more slowly, with REM sleep lasting a lot longer.
